Jade Presley is a pen name created to write romantasy stories that pair rich world building with characters that will make you blush and leave you thirsting for more. When not writing, Jade goes on epic quests during game night or hangs with her family and Irish Wolfhound in her Colorado mountain home.

I love being a why-choose romance author. There’s something so invigorating about crafting a story around an empowered female lead with multiple love interests showering her with attention. It’s such a refreshing take, and I couldn’t be happier that readers are enjoying my why-choose fantasies.

I fell in love with the genre after reading powerhouse authors like Katee Robert and Nikki St. Crowe, and when a why-choose of my own started shouting at me to write it, I didn’t hesitate to sit down and draft it out.

Why-choose offers a level of inclusivity that I find incredibly important, especially with so many different characters intertwined in one loving relationship. In The Never List, my most recent why-choose romantasy, each character is vastly different than the next, despite the five of them being in one relationship. They’re all from different backgrounds with different upbringings and outlooks on life. Some wear their heart on their sleeve while others you have to tear down walls to find. They come from different parts of the realm and have different priorities. Some struggle with anxiety issues while others are calm under pressure. There’s a delicate balance in ensuring each character’s deepest traits is displayed on the page while simultaneously showcasing how each of those traits strengthens and challenges the relationship, but it’s a wonderful process to undergo.

I believe there’s something for every reader in a why-choose like The Never List, whether you enjoy golden retriever vibes in your hero or prefer them on the darker side. You may like the adventurous type who is nothing but pure fun or maybe your vibe is an intellectual who unravels your soul one layer at a time, either way, this why-choose has got you. And you won’t find any toxic masculinity in the relationship either. There’s nothing but enthusiastic consent, support, passion, and empowerment, something I think everyone could find inspiration from which makes the themes in why-choose so relatable.

And outside the dynamic relationship aspect, there’s a rich fantasy world set amid chaos, paired with high stakes and emotional complexities that put the main character through the emotional ringer. It’s not all spice and fun, though there is a great deal of that too. There’s a magical balance between the driving fantasy plot and the intricate relationship storyline, but it narrows to one basic truth—the focus is on the female lead. She holds the power by claiming the attention of these four princes, and it’s what she decides to do with it that makes the why-choose genre so appealing, in my opinion.

It’s empowering as hell to see a woman claim her time, her worth, her perspective, and use it to craft a beautiful future for herself and those around her.

That’s what I found when writing Rylee’s story, empowerment. And hope. There’s something so inspiring about watching a female lead own every inch of herself in the face of adversity and I love that the why-choose genre brings out characters like this. I don’t find it surprising at all that readers are responding to the rise of the genre or the need for more stories that set the stage for female leads to be the sole focus of multiple partners. It’s about time they get the attention they deserve, and the possibilities in this genre are endless.
