USA Today bestselling author Shanna Hatfield grew up on a farm where hay fever and life lessons were always in season. Today, she blends her rural roots with a love for storytelling, crafting sweet, wholesome romances filled with hope, humor, quirky characters, and realistic heroes paired with strong, inspiring heroines. When she’s not writing or baking, you’ll find her savoring quiet moments at home in the Pacific Northwest with her husband—affectionately known as Captain Cavedweller.
As long as people have shared stories, love has been involved. From ancient tales to contemporary novels, love stories have enchanted us, capturing all the complexities of our emotions, longings, and need for connection.
Building a Lasting Connection
Modern fiction is often divided between stories that emphasize emotional connection and those that rely on explicit content. Both approaches have fans, but love stories filled with emotional depth and tender, powerful moments are the ones that grab onto my heart and refuse to let go.
Explicit content creates a momentary spark, but those scenes can dominate a book and leave the characters lingering in the background.
Chemistry and attraction are important parts of any relationship, but lasting love comes from a deep emotional connection. That’s why I find such pleasure in writing stories that emphasize the bond between two people—their laughter, dreams, strengths and weaknesses, and the way they lift each other up when life feels overwhelming.
To me, some of the most romantic moments come from a hero showing up at just the right time—not because he has to, but because he wants to be there for the heroine. It’s when the heroine sees into the hidden depths of the hero’s heart and doesn’t walk away. Or when two people realize they share the same fundamental values, and those ideals become a foundation for their relationship. Those are the moments that make a reader’s heart sing or sigh with contentment.
Readers long to connect with the characters in a story—to relate to their fears, joys, and vulnerabilities. To experience the nervous anticipation of a first date, or a humor-filled first impression. A story that weaves together relationships built on kindness, trust, faith, and respect creates the emotional intimacy readers crave.
Admittedly, I enjoy creating sparks of attraction between my characters, but it is so much more than that. It’s about the hero realizing he’s found the girl who truly sees him—flaws and all—and still loves him. It’s about the heroine knowing the man she’s given her heart to will do everything in his power to make her laugh, as well as protect and cherish her.
Love is Universal
Readers come from incredibly diverse backgrounds, and because of that, they might not share the same comfort level with explicit detail. Yet, nearly every person on the planet, regardless of age, background, or experience, can relate to the need to be accepted, understood, and loved. When the story touches on the emotions everyone experiences—the ache of loneliness, the warmth of a smile, the tenderness of an encouraging word or touch—then the writer taps into the universal connection of love.
Emotional storytelling focuses on growth, choices, inner turmoil, and hope. In my new release, The Bridge, emotions are as high as the stakes in the fast-paced story that circles around relationships and the bonds we make or break in vital moments.
When emotions become a key part of the story, they shift the investment of the readers from what will happen to whythe outcome matters to them. Vulnerability, for example, takes readers on a journey of seeing the characters risk their hearts, face rejection, and still choose love. It creates tension that is far richer than a fleeting physical encounter.
Emotional Depth
By building on emotional connection, I strive to write stories that are uplifting, feel realistic, and offer hope. When a reader picks up one of my books, I want them to step into the story and feel right at home, as though they are settling in with a good friend.
In a world filled with cynicism, fake connections, and fleeting physical encounters, it’s lovely to know there are stories that highlight relationships built on trust, honesty, intention, and love.
Long after a book is closed, readers tend to remember how it made them feel. The moment in a story when two people walk hand in hand to watch a vibrant sunset, laugh at an inside joke, or share a confession that brings tears—those are the heartfelt, emotional connections that endure.
Stories crafted with emotional depth do so much more than entertain. They can inspire readers to examine their own lives through a different lens, measure their capacity for love, and reflect on the relationships that make them better people.
For me, writing emotionally rich romance is about more than crafting happily-ever-afters (although I adore writing those). It’s about reminding readers of the wonder of love. About sprinkling seeds of hope in a world that often seems so dark. About celebrating little things, like shared humor, or the satisfaction of a promise kept that become the foundation of a lasting relationship.
Great love stories aren’t just about passion. At the heart of each one, you’ll find a strong and abiding emotional connection.
I want my stories to be remembered for how they made people feel. Did they laugh? Cry? See reflections of themselves in the struggles and triumphs of the characters? Did they walk away from the book feeling enriched and encouraged?
That is the legacy I want to leave as a writer—one that resonates with hope and honors this beautiful thing we call love.
